Back in the United States, Steve was sitting in a hotel room with Sam Wilson and his friend Sharon Carter.

Sharon, also known as Agent 13, was once an undercover S.H.I.E.L.D. liaison assigned to live in an apartment near Cap and report on all his activities. She proved to be a helpful ally during the fall of S.H.I.E.L.D., and they’d since become good friends. Sharon now worked for a security task force run by an international authority.

The three friends were enjoying one another’s company until a news report broke in, showing images of the destruction in Vienna. They saw the shattered glass, the destroyed building, the injured being loaded into ambulances…

The recording of an interview with Tony Stark played over the footage. “Today was an atrocity,” Tony said, choking back emotion, “and the Avengers stand ready to assist in any way that we are asked.”

Then the news played CCTV footage of the person who was seen setting the bomb. Cap looked closely.… It couldn’t be! But it was.

The image showed Bucky Barnes.

Bucky and Cap had grown up on the same block in Brooklyn in the 1930s and played together as children. When America entered World War II, Bucky and the then-superpowered Cap got the chance to serve together. Bucky was a member of the elite Howling Commandos unit, fighting alongside Cap. As childhood friends and also brothers-in-arms, Cap and Bucky were as close as two friends could be.

But during combat against the villainous Red Skull, Bucky had been lost. Cap had believed his best friend dead. Then Cap was lost, too, frozen in Arctic ice.

When Cap’s body was discovered and miraculously thawed out in the present-day world, he believed everyone he had ever known was gone. He thought he was alone.

Only recently had Cap discovered that Bucky had been kept alive and brainwashed by Arnim Zola—a Hydra scientist who had worked with Red Skull and infiltrated S.H.I.E.L.D. Zola had turned Bucky into a living weapon for Hydra, and Cap’s old friend had become an unwilling terrorist pawn, known by the code name the Winter Soldier.

Sam and Sharon saw the footage, too, and knew what it would mean to Cap. Sharon got a text on her phone, which brought Steve out of his reverie. Looking at it, she said, “I have to go to work.”

Within thirty minutes she was on a military plane headed for Vienna.
